Volcanic ash (tephra) is incredibly useful for correlating deposits and dating stratigraphic records.
As part of my UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship we have set up new facilities to extract tephra, and analyse its major and trace element compositions with state-of-the-art electron microprobe and laser ablation facilities.
